Mixed-Size BJJ Gi: Jacket and Trousers in Different Sizes

Yes. A gi jacket and trousers can be different sizes, and with ours it's one gi at the same price as any adult size of that gi. Pick "Mixed / Women sizes" on the gi page and write the two sizes in, such as "A1 jacket / A2W trouser". Broad shoulders with a slim waist usually means a bigger jacket; bigger hips or legs, bigger trousers.
Who needs a split size
A size chart assumes your top and bottom grow together. Plenty of bodies don't:
The jacket that fits your back leaves the trousers hanging off you. Jacket one size up, trousers at your size.
The trousers that fit your thighs come with a jacket you swim in. Trousers one size up, or Wide; jacket at your size.
The jacket's fine, the trousers stop above the ankle. Same number, Long cut on the trousers only.
Here's what real splits from our orders change, against the matching pair of trousers. The measurements are the finished trousers:

Two of those five don't change the number at all, only the cut. That's the version people miss: you can be an A1 all over and still need the Long trouser.
How to pick the two sizes
Fastest: the size finder on any gi page. Give it your height and weight, then pick your build. Choose "Broad shoulders, slim waist" and it moves the jacket one size up; choose "Narrower top, broader hips" and it moves the trousers up. (At the very top of a chart there's no size above, so it gives you one size instead.) It shows both sizes side by side, and offers the split outright: "Or — order a mixed-size pair… No extra charge."
It also gives you a single size if you'd rather not split. For the broad-shoulders case it picks the jacket's size, because, in its words, "a snug jacket reads wrong, slightly loose pants read intentional. Bring a belt."
By hand: size the jacket for your chest, shoulders and arms, and the trousers for your waist, hips and leg length, each from its own row of the size chart. Every size has its own page with the finished measurements, so you can compare, say, the A1 and A1L trousers directly.
How to order a mixed-size gi
- Pick the gi. Open the gi you want. Every adult gi of ours can be ordered split.
- Choose Mixed / Women sizes. In the size options, pick Mixed / Women sizes. It costs the same as any adult size.
- Write the two sizes in. A box opens under the sizes. Type the jacket size and the trouser size, for example A1 jacket / A2W trouser.
- Or let the finder fill it. Open the size finder on the same page. If your answers split across two sizes, it offers the mixed pair and fills the box for you.
- Confirm after ordering. We email after your order to confirm your measurements. Anything to change, reply there.
Women's F-series sizes go through the same option, so an F1 jacket with F0 trousers is ordered exactly the same way.
Is a mixed-size gi legal for competition?
The IBJJF checks colour and fit, not the label. Its uniform rules need the top and trousers in the same colour, and they measure each piece against your body: sleeves within 2 cm of the wrist, trousers within 2 cm of the ankle bone. They don't ask for the two pieces to share a size. If anything a split helps: trousers that actually reach your ankle pass the check that a too-short matching pair fails. When a split isn't enough
If no combination of two sizes from the chart fits, because you're past the end of it or your proportions sit outside every cut, that's what made-to-measure is for. Try the split first: it costs the same as the gi in one size.
Our recommendation
If your last gi fit one half of you, don't size the whole thing up. Keep the half that fit, change the half that didn't, and let the cut do the work before the number. Run the size finder on the gi you want: if it splits you, take the split.

- What gi size if I have big legs or wide hips?
- Take the trousers one size up, or in the Wide cut, and keep the jacket at your size. Our size finder does this when you choose "Narrower top, broader hips".
- Can I mix cuts, like standard jacket and Long trousers?
- Yes. Some splits only change the cut: an A1 jacket with A1L trousers adds 5 cm of trouser length at the same waist. Write it in the same way, for example A1 jacket / A1L trouser.
- Is a mixed-size gi IBJJF legal?
- The IBJJF uniform rules require the top and trousers in the same colour and measure each piece against your body (sleeves within 2 cm of the wrist, trousers within 2 cm of the ankle bone). They set no rule that the two share a size.
