Sizing

A1 Gi Size: Height, Weight and Who It Fits

Updated

Short answer: A1 fits 163–173 cm (5'4"–5'8") and 64–75 kg (141–165 lb). A plain A-size, no cut applied. It sits in the busiest part of the range, where most of the sport is.

Where these sizes start, stop and overlap. Bands that share a weight range but not a height range are the ones people get wrong.

How to know it's you

If a gi has ever fitted you without you thinking about it, you are the build the A-series was drawn for and A1 is where your numbers land. The moment you start noticing the sleeves or the back, the fix is a cut — A1F, A1L, A1W — not a different number.

Is A1 you?

Two numbers and we’ll tell you straight, including when the answer is a different size.

The finished gi, measured flat

Wingspan is cuff to cuff, jacket length is collar to hem, chest is laid flat. These are the numbers the size is cut to, not an estimate from the chart.

If A1 is not quite it

Step down to A0 or up to A2 if the band is wrong on weight. If the problem is that one half of you is a different size from the other, order it that way: a jacket in one size and trousers in another is a normal order here. It is the option we ship most after the plain A-sizes, which tells you how many people the standard grid does not fit.

And if no combination on the chart works, custom sizing is $189 and is cut to your measurements.

Is A1 IBJJF legal?

Size has nothing to do with legality, but fit does. The IBJJF measures sleeve and trouser length against your wrist and ankle with the arm extended, and a gi that is too short fails at weigh-in. The full requirements cover colour, fabric and the measurement rules.

Frequently asked questions

What height and weight is a A1 gi?
163–173 cm (5'4" to 5'8") and 64–75 kg (141–165 lb) on the All Around chart.
What are the measurements of a A1 gi?
Jacket: 162 cm wingspan cuff to cuff, 76 cm collar to hem, 54 cm chest laid flat. Trousers: 94 cm long with a 54 cm waist. Measured on the finished garment.
Can I order a A1 jacket with different trousers?
Yes. All Around gis can be ordered with the jacket and trousers in different sizes — pick "Mixed / Women sizes" on the gi page and write both sizes in. It is the option we ship most after the plain A-sizes.
